Overview
Want to get your picky eater to try new foods?
Want to take the chore out of cooking?
If so Chef-K has a few tips for you:
- Prepare meals and shop with your child whenever possible
- Set your child up for success and safety
- Make preparing the meal an adventure—let the wonder of a child guide you.
- Pre-school children can:
- Help wash fruit and vegetables
- Carefully use a butter knife or grater
- Set part of the table, empty dishwashers (no sharp knives)
- Stir, push buttons on mixers & appliances
- Find the magic & surprise in fruit and vegetables. For example:
- Find the hidden star inside an apple
- Oranges that aren’t orange
- Taste test different colored apples, oranges, potatoes, radishes
It’s easiest to find unusual vegetables at farmer’s markets, natural or specialty grocers. When your child helps prepare they are:
- More likely to try the food
- Proud to help
Safety considerations
- Make sure to wash hands in warm soapy water 20-30 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday Song twice…)
- Make sure to wash fruit & vegetables in cold water—Soak for 1-2 minutes to remove sand and contaminates.
- Caution with sharp utensils, appliances and hot stoves.
