Tips & Techniques-Preschoolers

Want to get your picky eater to try new foods?
Want to take the chore out of cooking?

If so Chef-K has a few tips for you:

  • Prepare meals and shop with your child whenever possible
  • Set your child up for success and safety
  • Make preparing the meal an adventure—let the wonder of a child guide you.
  • Pre-school children can:
    • Help wash fruit and vegetables
    • Carefully use a butter knife or grater
    • Set part of the table, empty dishwashers (no sharp knives)
    • Stir, push buttons on mixers & appliances
    • Find the magic & surprise in fruit and vegetables.  For example:
      • Find the hidden star inside an apple
      • Oranges that aren’t orange
      • Taste test different colored apples, oranges, potatoes, radishes

It’s easiest to find unusual vegetables at farmer’s markets, natural or specialty grocers. When your child helps prepare they are:

  • More likely to try the food
  • Proud to help

Safety considerations

  • Make sure to wash hands in warm soapy water 20-30 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday Song twice…)
  • Make sure to wash fruit & vegetables in cold water—Soak for 1-2 minutes to remove sand and contaminates.
  • Caution with sharp utensils, appliances and hot stoves.
