A Quick Bite with Friends Summer culinary camps are in full swing. I write this note from Columbus, MS, during a summer thunderstorm. In June, Chef-K trainers have taught eight camps across six states. We’re excited that now 120 additional children and teens are capable of preparing their own healthy snacks, lunch, and breakfast. We’ve already had reports of several who have made a family meal using Chef-K menus they brought home from camp. I love to hear this kind of news; it’s why I get up every morning. If we can help even a few people learn to make healthier choices, we have succeeded. See below for more news. -- Laurie Zerga, Founder Chef-K News of Interest USDA New Food Icon As you may know, the USDA announced a new food icon, "ChooseMyPlate", in early June. Subsequently, Chef-K trainers introduced it as part of our summer curriculum in the “All American Camp” for USAF. As background, the lesson has in the past included a reference to “MyPyramid” as a way to review the food groups. So instead we used the new food icon and presented it to the participants as part of our lesson. Doof Event (food backwards) Chef-K participated in the Doof-a-Paloosa event at Jack London Square in Oakland, CA in May. It was a super fun event all focused on kids and food. The event enabled kids to blog live about the different food vendors and activities. There was also an area called “play with your food” where the kids styled food into crazy creatures. Check out the blogging and the photography. Childhood Obesity conference A great conference in San Diego just last week. We were grateful to have an opportunity to do a poster presentation. There was so much great information, so stay tuned for more reports. New Products Last month we announced our new Garden Kit. It’s been very well received by some of our clients. We’ve also finished up our Harvest Recipes and have two clients using it this year already. Harvest Recipes These 6X4 formatted recipe cards are ready for download and printing. There are over 20 simple recipes featuring over 40 seasonal ingredients that are ready to use. They were created to follow the harvest season from May to October in most parts of the U.S. It includes an index by seasonal produce and herbs. The recipes are perfect companion to a summer garden project or farmer's market visits. | About Chef-K - The concept for Chef-K was initiated in 2002 when Laurie Zerga’s daughter, Megan Zerga, 14, wanted to take a summer cooking camp. While searching for courses in the San Francisco Bay area, Laurie and Megan found a few summer courses for ages 9-12 year-olds, several recreational cooking courses for adults, and courses specifically for the professional. They also discovered wonderful combination of cooking and tours for adults in Italy and France. Megan loved the idea of combining tours with cooking. There were very few options for teens. At the time, Laurie was drafting a portfolio of business plans for parents and their children. She decided to prototype a week long culinary camp for eight teens. The camp was for friends of Megan and her 12-year old sister, Kelley. Within a week, she had arranged private lessons with two local chefs as well as tours of two farms, a chocolate factory and fish processing plant. The session was filled with a waiting list within 5 days. Visit http://www.chef-k.com for more information. |
